What is SEARCH?

The State Environmental Agency Risk Collaboration for Harmonization (SEARCH) is an internet database of State agency risk assessment divisions and contact information (division address, phone number, and a link to the agency website) by State. Although other databases exist that list general State agency information (e.g., agency address and website), SEARCH is the first to provide information specific to agency risk assessment divisions.

How can I use SEARCH?

State risk assessors can use SEARCH to identify and contact other state risk assessment divisions that can provide technical assistance in the identification and selection of chemical risk values, or other risk assessment related support.

Why was SEARCH created?

States environmental agencies are charged with making risk management decisions that protect the public despite ongoing limitations in technical, financial, and human resources.  In the absence of federal risk values, states often work independently in the identification and selection of chemical risk values for application in human health risk assessment.  SEARCH is intended to jumpstart collaboration in state risk assessments, to maximize the efficient use of resources, and to help ensure high quality and harmonized risk assessments.

I'm a state risk assessor, but I'm not listed...

We would love to include you! If you are a state risk assessor, but you are not listed and would like to be included in this database, please complete this short form.

My state contact information needs updating…

We conduct regular updates to ensure SEARCH contains the most up-to-date information; however, if your state information is incorrect, please contact us.

Will SEARCH provide other risk information in the future?

SEARCH was built using data collected in a 50 state survey, where state officials were asked for suggestions on the type of risk assessment information they would find most useful.  Respondents indicated that they would like SEARCH to include a list of risk values by State and assumptions supporting those values, particularly for those substances not included in IRIS.  Other suggestions from States included a regularly updated list of significant risk assessment-related actions and risk policy decisions, by State, as well as links to State-approved risk assessment guidance documents.

What would make SEARCH more useful to you?  Contact us.
